Position Summary

We at Nestlé Research & Development in Konolfingen near Bern / Switzerland develop for Nestlé worldwide new

products, processes, and packaging concepts in the areas of Dairy and Nutrition. In addition, we also provide

technical assistance to our factories.

As a Nutrition Biotechnology Intern, your main responsibility will be to optimize fermentation and downstream

processes for probiotic bacteria through research, experimentation, and analysis. We are looking for a motivated

candidate with a technical flair to support scientific research projects in probiotic manufacturing.


A Day in the Life of a Nutrition Biotechnology Intern

Optimize fermentation process for maximal growth of probiotic bacteria:

• Perform literature search related to the project topics to build scientific hypothesis

• Plan and conduct fermentations with probiotic bacteria at laboratory scale

• Document, analyze & present results internally to the company

Optimize subsequent downstream process to limit losses in the process and throughout the product shelf-life:

• Assess different drying strategies/parameters through a Design of Experiment

• Plan & perform trials for drying of probiotics at lab scale

• Conduct analysis of dried bacteria using both classical and diverse modern microbiological methods

Bachelor’s or master’s degree in biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Food Sciences

or related sciences


• Strong interest in fermentation technology; First experience in microbiology is an asset

  • Proactive and result focus combined with an innovative mindset
  • Good communication skills and working well in teams 
  • Fluent in English (oral and written), at ease at networking in international environment. German is a plus.

or related sciences

• Strong interest in fermentation technology; First experience in microbiology is an asset

• Cooperating well in a team, autonomous, structured, and proactive


• Good command of MS Office tools, more specifically proficient in Excel

• Good written and oral English communication skills, basic German is an asset
